Dads get some special challenges with parenting, just like moms do. email Sam Being a Dad in a Changing World -from Daughters.com A friend of mine named Alex told me an interesting story. It seems that one day, he came home from work only to hear his wife say, “She went to the mall again without permission. I’m too angry to deal with her right now. You’ll have to do it.” Dutifully, Alex went to his 14-year-old daughter’s room, lectured her about the dangers of not telling them where she was, and sternly meted out the previously agreed-upon punishment—grounding.
The most frequent complaint I hear from fathers centers on how unfairly guys feel they’re treated in family court. As a dad named Don told me, “Our society is still a long way from believing that moms and dads have an equal responsibility to children financially.”
Three-quarters of American fathers say their relationships with their daughters are excellent or very good, but two-thirds of American fathers don’t think that their active involvement is vital to their daughters’ health and well-being. That major disconnect is among the findings of the first-ever national poll on the state of father-daughter relationships in the United States.
If you’re like me, you have never testified before Congress, picketed any big corporations, and even put a bumper sticker on your car for last fall’s elections. But when I was driving with my daughters recently, a small but important event changed me from reserved father to a budding public activist. |
